FAQ

Before we talk.

A few things you might want to know about working with me. If your question isn’t here, we can talk it through.

Getting started

What does the first conversation cost?

There’s no cost for our first 30 minutes together. We get to know each other, talk about your business, and see whether I can help. You don’t need to prepare anything or commit to working together.

Can I come to you just for advice?

Yes. A consulting engagement can focus on reviewing a proposal, assessing your current setup, or helping you make a decision. You do not need to hire me for implementation. We agree on the scope and fee for advice before the work starts.

What kinds of businesses are a good fit?

I work with businesses of all sizes, from individual owners to established teams. A good fit is a business that wants experienced advice on a decision, more from its current systems, or help making a practical improvement. I’m based in Southern Oregon and also work remotely with businesses across the US.

Do you work outside Southern Oregon?

Yes. Southern Oregon is home, and I also work with businesses across the US through remote conversations and consulting engagements.

Working together

How small can an engagement be?

We can focus on one question, one proposal, or one part of how your business works. We’ll talk about what would be useful and agree on a price before any paid work begins.

How is the work priced?

Pricing depends on the scope of the work. After our introduction, I put the proposed work, deliverables, price, and timing in writing. You can ask questions and decide whether to move forward. If the scope changes, we agree on the cost before proceeding.

How long does a project take?

A review or recommendation may need only a short engagement; setting up or connecting systems can take longer. The scope, price, and timeline are agreed before paid work starts.

What happens after the work is complete?

We agree on documentation, walkthroughs, account access, and ongoing responsibilities as part of the scope. You will know how to use the setup and who looks after it. Further consulting or implementation can be agreed separately when needed.

Your technology

Do we need to replace our current systems?

Not necessarily. I start by looking at what you have and how it is being used. Better configuration, clearer processes, or guidance for your team may be enough. If a change is worth considering, we discuss the costs and tradeoffs first.

Can you help us understand our cybersecurity risks?

Yes. We start with how your team works, the information you rely on, and any concerns you have. I can help you review account access, email security, and backup and recovery plans, then agree on practical next steps with you and your IT provider. If the work needs a specialist, I’ll help you understand what to ask for and who should be involved.

We already have an IT provider. Does that complicate things?

Not at all. I work alongside your IT provider on business priorities, everyday workflows, and improvements to the tools your team uses. We agree on responsibilities so the work fits with the support you already have.

Do you provide managed IT, help desk, or daily support?

I focus on consulting and helping businesses make improvements. For daily support and managed IT, I can introduce you to Aviega, where I’m a partner. I’ll explain that relationship when we talk, and if another provider is a better fit, I’ll say so.
